A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Roman Thrace
Thrace during the Late Republic and Principate is difficult to define as a cultural and political unity. In tracing major historical events, this chapter emphasizes administrative and institutional developments, the emergence of the Thracian “client” kingdom, and the formation and modalities of provincial governments in Moesia and Thracia. A detailed focus on colonization and urbanization, as well as the role of the cities in integrating these territories into an empire‐wide model, will help to explain social and economic transformations. Discussion of town planning and architecture concentrates mostly on the peculiar image of the urban centers; some general remarks on provincial culture and society are also offered.
