Advances in the Use of Fluorspar for Fluoridation
This article discusses fluorspar, by far the least expensive commercially available fluoride compound, and the advantages of using it for water treatment. Unfortunately, because of its insolubility in water, it has long been impossible to use. Methods of using fluorspar in water treatment have been developed, however, and are described in the article. Sources and properties of fluorspar are discussed, along with uses in water treatment, advantages of fluorspar, direct use, suitability for larger plants, and design and operation of a large unit. An example is provided of the use of a properly designed dissolving tank at the Bel Air, Maryland, water plant in July 1956. It is 2 ft in diameter and 4 ft high. Its capacity is about 75 gal.
