Performance of Venturi Meters Installed Downstream of Bends
The ability to accurately measure the flow in a closed conduit is essential in today's world in which water conservation is a priority. Current standards specify the recommended upstream straight distances required between fittings such as a 90° elbow and a Venturi flow meter. Although the standards vary for different Venturi flow meters, proper installation is crucial for obtaining an accurate flow measurement. Various tests were performed at the Utah Water Research Laboratory in Logan to determine the effects of a short‐form Venturi on the discharge coefficient when the Venturi is installed in piping that does not satisfy the straight length specifications of the current standards. The tests showed that short‐form Venturi meters generally perform within the desired accuracy range established by the standards even when placed in piping configurations that do not conform to the requirements set forth in the standards.
