A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
As a map, the plan is in fact conceived as a document that allows us to interpret the city according to its physical construction: it shows the arrangement of buildings, and therefore of squares and streets, as a current and concrete phenomenon. In terms of scale, these cartographic plans are generally situated in an in‐between area, somewhere between the world of geographers and that of architects. Three types of documents allow us to read these plans: topographic maps, aerial photographs, and cadastral plans and ground plans. The combined analysis of these three types of documents constitutes the basis of the study of urban planning and urban plans, which will group into three large families: quadrangular plans, radioconcentric plans and “stratified” plans. Like Menger sponges, the generalization of vertical urban planning profoundly modifies the logic of the arrangements.
