Self‐Healing Bacterial Cementitious Composites
Concrete is one of the most commonly used construction materials around the world and plays an indispensable role to mankind. However, deterioration and formation of cracks, a natural phenomenon that occurs in these materials, results in laborious and capital‐intensive maintenance and repair work. Hence, a cost effective and low maintenance technique is of importance. Self‐healing of the affected cementitious materials has received prominent interest, owing to its long lasting nature and low maintenance. Among the various self‐healing techniques, microbial self‐healing approach is distinguished by its potential for long lasting, rapid and active crack repair, while also being environmentally friendly. Through this chapter provides comprehensive information about the basic concepts of self‐healing concrete are expressed using microbes, various types of bacteria as self‐healing agents and different mechanistic aspects of bacterial self‐healing process in cement concretes. The factors influencing the efficiency of bacterial self‐healing concretes are discussed. This chapter also explores the key reactions parameters, nutrient requirements for bacterial growth for self‐healing. Potential challenges in microbial crack treatment are discussed, and recommendations for future work are expressed.
