Designing for the Outmigration of Care
Key trends and forces that are driving the outmigration of care include the pressure for healthcare organizations to reduce costs while maintaining quality. The majority of mobile healthcare organizations provide care services to patients inside their mobile units, with the remaining programs transporting clinicians and equipment to remote sites where they set up temporary operations in an existing building. This chapter provides an overview and examples to illustrate the design of workplace‐, school‐, community‐, and home‐based health facilities, in addition to wellness centers and destinations; the outmigration of care is also expected to have an impact on the design of some clinic facilities. This outmigration of care is helping to reduce the per‐capita cost of healthcare services by making preventative care more easily accessible and a part of people's everyday lives.
