Rapidly Growing County Ensures Smooth Growth with a New SCADA System
This article discusses how installing a supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA) helped Brunswick County, North Carolina, deal with tremendous population growth, and to access and monitor the huge amounts of data collected each minute from the various sites throughout the country. Initially, a CitectSCADA system with 5,000 I/O points was installed. As the population grew, the system was upgraded to include 15,000 points. The system allows operators to check tank levels, pump station operations, and estimated time runs for the day, week, and month at any of the county's sites with a click of the mouse. All the operators' vehicles have laptops running the system to allow remote access to any site. Steps taken to protect the system from threats such as intruders or hurricanes are discussed along with allowances for future growth.
