Evolution of Value Engineering and Value Management
The three stages of the evolution of value management began with a structured cost reduction technique in the manufacturing industry of the United States called value analysis. The second stage began in the 1960s and shifted the focus from the analysis of existing products to the analysis of the evolving design in manufacturing and construction in a process called value engineering, which spread internationally. The third stage of value management, which began in the 1990s, widened the scope of the service to include the analysis of the organisational and business strategies, which give rise to the requirement for products and services. This chapter describes the evolution of value engineering and value management and introduces the basic components of a value management exercise. The chapter concludes with an international review of current standards, guidance and research.
