The Relationship between Building Height and Construction Costs
Conventional wisdom in the construction industry suggests that for the same areas of accommodation, tall buildings are more expensive to construct than low rise buildings. This chapter examines these conventional views by focusing on the research that has been undertaken to analyse them. It then proposes new ideas and alternatives on how the cost‐height relationship might work. The chapter starts which a discussion on earlier research work in the 1970s and 1980s revealing a more complex relationship than the simple linear notion that as height increases so does cost. This is followed by an analysis of more recent work which has examined this further including other factors such as geographical location which can be influential. Data are explored from Shanghai and Hong Kong to establish the nature of the cost–height relationships and to generate a better understanding of cost profiles and the factors influencing building costs.
