Evolution of Small‐Scale Rainwater Harvesting in the Hellenic World Through the Millennia
This chapter presents a brief review of the significant milestones of the historical and diachronic evolution of rainwater harvesting. Three major periods are considered, namely the prehistoric to medieval period (c. 3200 BCE–1400 CE), early and mid‐modern times (c. 1400–1900 CE) and contemporary times (c. 1900 CE–present) and within each period the corresponding milestones are identified and presented. The chapter focuses on scientific and technological advances with reference to historical evolution through centuries. It presents some characteristic examples in selected sites, supporting the idea that the Greeks could be considered among the pioneers in the technological development of water cisterns. Small‐scale hydraulic structures known as cisterns have been widely used for collection and storage rainwater throughout the history of Crete and Aegean islands. Throughout Hellenic history, rainwater harvesting has been an essential part of its great civilization.
