Visual Thinking
Visual descriptions can be even more valuable during the engineering analysis to discuss performance expectations with colleagues as well as to enhance personal understanding. This chapter describes ways in which to sketch expected fire performance. Before discussing other aspects of visual communication, the chapter briefly describes a building in which an engineering performance analysis had been done 8 months before the fire occurred. The objective of this analysis was to understand the building's existing fire performance and describe how alternative proposals would change the fire risk. The framework structure, the Interactive Performance Information (IPI) chart, deterministic evaluations, probabilistic estimates, and performance curves are tools. They help an engineer to select the most appropriate techniques for different ways to evaluate a building. These help to adapt for constraints of time, knowledge, and the technical state of the art. Each technique has its role, and each relates to the others in some way.
