The buildings or superstructure can be used to cover the entire farm, part of the farm, or only the production units. Several types of buildings can be used for aquaculture facilities. On the basis of their construction they can be categorized into different types, ranging from simple superstructures with or without walls to complete buildings. Buildings may have different shapes. The cost of the load‐carrying system is an important part of the total cost of the building. Various materials are used for constructing buildings. Buildings can be built on site from the foundations up or can be delivered as prefabricated parts that are assembled on site. In a cold climate, the building should be insulated if the air inside is to be temperate. The ground conditions must be suitable for erecting a building. Some kind of ventilation is therefore necessary, even if the walls are not insulated, to avoid excessive humidity.
