The Exam Room Today
While the basic components of exam rooms remain familiar in appearance, their size, layout, and other design features are evolving rapidly to address the significant changes in the activities occurring within them. This chapter defines the acceptable levels of sound transference between exam rooms and adjacent spaces in order to determine an appropriate design that would ensure patient privacy and confidentiality. Design of the types of exam rooms has evolved over the past several years to address the wide range of ways that clinics use these spaces. The chapter presents projects that illustrate how design professionals have used prototypes as a reference for developing exam room designs customized to meet the specific needs of clinic clients. On average, design professionals have responded by creating exam rooms that are larger, more standardized, more flexible, and more comfortable.
