Before Innovation Comes Inspiration
Innovation within the water industry can be as difficult to define as it is slow to occur. For most businesses, the cycle of innovation is driven by the need for survival as competitors force an enterprise to either improve or exit the market. At its core, however, the water industry consists of utilities that are natural monopolies protected from competition by their significant investments in infrastructure and natural resources. How much this monopolistic mindset affects innovation at water and wastewater utilities is a matter of debate, but several other groups in the water industry ‐ namely researchers, consultants, and manufacturers ‐ are subject to the laws of competition and so must continually seek innovation.
