A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism

The recently opened new Lightrailstation designed by the Dutch architectural firm ZJA Zwarts & Jansma Architects has been erected close to the central station in The Hague, The Netherlands. A spatial steel structure made out of rectangular hollow section is covering the platforms floating approximately 10 m above street level. The rolled profiles arranged in a distance of 1.50 m parallel to each other are organized in two independent layers rigidly connected to each other. Since they are spanning over the tubular station diagonally from one to the other outer edge of the platform, the steel profiles need to be double‐curved. The bent diamond shaped glass panels can only be attached to the outer layer of the steel grid, therefore the glass is two‐side supported (see pp. 363–368).
