A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This article presents a method of design for ductile‐iron pipe as recommended by the American Cast Iron Pipe Company. Other manufacturers have also devised design methods ductile‐iron pipe. As can be noted from the article and from a comparison with AWWA Manual H1 (ASA A21.1), Computation of Strength and Thickness of Cast Iron Pipe, the design of ductile‐iron pipe differs from that of (grey) cast‐iron pipe, as the latter is a semirigid pipe and the former has considerable ductility and flexibility. The development of the method is divided among the following three sections: metal properties, a discussion of the physical properties and tests used in specification and qualification of ductile‐iron pipe; design principles and procedure, a presentation of the engineering principles and formulas used in the design method and the details of the design steps; and, design verification, a presentation of data from structural‐strength tests and trench tests of ductile‐iron pipe that verify design principles, procedure, and design values.
