Concurrent Collection of Hydraulic and Sediment Data in Rivers
This article discusses a method of concurrently collecting hydraulic and sediment data that utilizes existing equipment. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with US‐AEC, conducted an investigation on the lower Columbia River, downstream from the Hanford Atomic Energy Reservation in southeast Washington. The need for concurrent observation of velocity, depth, and suspended‐ sediment concentrations in the river, especially in reaches affected by tides, led to a study of the multiple use of a suspended‐sediment sampler; first, as a sounding weight in conjunction with a current meter; and second, as a sediment sampler.
