What does ‘sustainable construction’ mean? An overview
This chapter presents the background and basic principles of how to achieve sustainable construction. It aims to convey a comprehensive understanding of sustainability and identifies the opportunities and essentials that can result from sensible implementation of sustainable steel construction strategies. The choice of construction materials used is more important because they are increasingly impacting the ecological quality of construction during its life cycle. The building sector is an important player in pursuing the sustainability goals. In order to achieve a sustainable built environment, there is the need to work to achieve a balance between the three fundamental dimensions of sustainability environment, society and economy. A building with a high degree of flexibility and convertibility of use can be adapted to meet changing social demands. This leads to the property having a prolonged life cycle, which is beneficial economically and ecologically.
