UHPFRC Sunshades: An Elegant Solution for Regulating Heat Input in Buildings
This chapter presents a recent creation employing sunshades made of Ductal® ultra high performance fiber‐reinforced concrete (UHPFRC). In order to regulate the heat input for the new police headquarters at Nantes, Atelier 234 Architects have devised thin mineral components attached by cable stays. This chapter, after recalling the properties of the material employed, describes how Jousselin has cast components and installed them on‐site. This chapter also demonstrates how the intrinsic properties of the material enable slender, durable components to be designed, and how the sunshade application fits naturally into other applications for UHPFRC. Then, the chapter explains how the precautions taken in producing and installing these components improve the energy performance of buildings and reduce the impact of energy loss on the environment.
