Water Harvesting Technique as Source of Safe Drinking Water in Rural Areas of Sudan
Rainwater harvesting techniques were practiced many centuries ago in different countries across the globe. The harvested water on river/Wadi system could be used on a large scale and for multiple purposes. Most parts of Sudan lie within arid or semiarid zones, and the annual rainfall varies from about 800 mm in the south to about zero mm in the north. A rainwater harvesting program (RWHP) could be used to reduce the negative impacts of climate change, droughts, and floods. The family water tank is a new water harvesting technique that is piloted in the Gedid area in Sudan. The drinking water sources in the region are Haffirs and small natural depressions. RWHP plays significant role in achieving millennium development goals and it's suitable for areas with no rivers, streams, Wadis, and groundwater. Rainfall is the main water source and the mean annual rainfall in the region is about 375 mm.
