Evaluation of Method for Counting Gross Radioactivity in Water
This article discusses a study on the determination of radioactivity in water. The first sample examined in the study was prepared to simulate a natural water sample, and was examined for the following: accuracy of radioactivity at normal or background levels; factors in the analytic procedure that affect accuracy; and, whether there is a need for standardization of sample preparation and counting techniques. The second sample in the study evaluated the following factors determined to be significant as a result of the first sample: a prescribed sample‐preparation procedure; the type of counter to be used for beta or gamma counting; preparation of the standard; and, the effect of sample thickness (self‐absorption).
