The Consolidation Continues, With GE Leading the Pack
This article discusses how further consolidation within the water industry has included a few well‐publicized acquisitions as well as many others that have attracted little attention. The article highlights key moves by emerging large industrial players to establish long‐term strategic market positions in the industry. Primary among these moves was GE Water & Process Technologies' announcement on March 14 that it would acquire industry‐leading membrane manufacturer ZENON Environmental Inc. of Canada, marking a strategic shift for GE toward the municipal market. The article goes on to discuss other large and small players and their acquisitions in the water treatment and purification area, and points out that one result of all of these transactions over the past several years has been a distinct decline in the number of individual water investment opportunities available in the United States.
