A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This chapter seeks to establish updated, clear, and data‐based criteria for a “new” public health, safety, and welfare (HSW). Building a healthy community depends on the cumulative health improvement of individual stakeholders and neighborhoods. Immunization has eliminated smallpox; virtually knocked out measles, diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping cough; and greatly reduced tuberculosis and influenza. Mapping neighborhood parks and locating gaps helps orient communities toward maximizing both community wellness and real estate premiums. Rich soils, a temperate climate, and a long history of making things position Detroit as an emerging center for landscape urbanism. Spatial qualities that optimize the convenience and legibility of stairs may have the most influence on stair use in buildings. Lighting is viewed from many different perspectives— on the street, in an outside café, from a second‐story apartment, or from across the valley.
