Suburban Regeneration
An Exercise in Perpetual Place‐Making
Suburbs are experiments in regenerative place‐making; occupants continuously remake their houses as they re‐imagine themselves. Historically, suburbs have housed aspiring middle classes in semi‐rural environments, but over time suburbs have often also declined in material value thereby attracting lower economic classes. Three models of suburban regeneration are explored: (i) gentrification processes that seek to preserve the ‘history’ of older houses; (ii) mansionisation of houses thought to be ‘too small’; and (iii) creation of ‘ethnoburbs’ by the settlement of unequal proportions of immigrants. Historic preservation or mansionisation tends to occur in older neighbourhoods where house prices are low because of prior neglect or deterioration. These two strategies bring homeowners into conflict when debating the future of the neighbourhood, sometimes resulting in preservation activism that aims at legislation to protect older houses. Creating the ethnoburb, however, ensures neighbourhood diversity but without guaranteeing a singular future. The suburbs remain a source of ever‐changing flexibility.
