Maintaining standards on site embodies the technique of ensuring that the quality of materials, goods, workmanship, and finished building are of the standard required by the specification and drawings. The architect can reject work and materials which are not upto the specified standards but the architect cannot demand a higher standard than that. However, an architect who has a shambolic office routine will be in no position to either specify clear standards (high or low) or to get to grips with enforcing it on site. The architect must also keep a sharp eye on the contractor's organisation of the site. Although control is exercised on site primarily by the contractor, it will have a complex network of site agents, trades foremen, and charge‐hands in supervisory capacities. Visits to site should be unexpected and certainly when important elements are being constructed. It is worthwhile learning the tolerances allowed.
