Members in Compression
Members in compression have to be considered mainly with reference to instability, which influences remarkably their performance. In the initial part of the chapter, the basis concepts of stability of axially loaded members are proposed, by considering also the influence of shear on the value of the elastic critical load. The main European and US requirements for design are discussed, focusing on the approaches for the evaluation of the effective length of members in frames. The proposed worked examples regard the design of isolated columns.
