Water Treatment Plant Sludge Disposal Practices in the United Kingdom
Reappraisal of disposal methods has been forced on the water supply industry in the United Kingdom (UK). Improvement of the quality of effluents discharged to rivers is a first step. As a basis for consent to discharge, River Authorities use the standard recommended by the Royal Commission on Sewage Disposal in 1912 and amend these standards depending upon local conditions. Practice in the UK in sludge disposal is now developing towards the use of the minimum space for plant, lagoons, and tips. Any increase in cost must be considered as unavoidable.
