Steady‐State Modeling of Composition and Production of Activated Sludge
The mathematical model used for computing the composition and production of activated sludge is derived from the method of material balance. This model is a refinement of the earlier Chudoba–Tucek steady‐state model, and it is applicable to single‐sludge systems with or without primary clarification. Solids composition and production are expressed explicitly as a function of solids retention time. The new model contains two variable parameters that are characteristic of the influent and can be easily determined using laboratory data. Applications to the sizing of solids processing facilities and computation of the true food‐to‐microorganism ratio introduced by the author are illustrated.
