Systems Theory as the Basis for Bridging Science and Practice of Engineering Systems
This introductory chapter sets the stage for the remainder of the book by exploring aspects of General Systems Theory (GST) (i.e. Systems Science, systems technology, and systems philosophy) as a basis for bridging the gap between Systems Science and engineering systems. Following a short introduction to GST, two primary objectives are pursued: an overview and positioning of GST for contribution to systems engineering development and an examination of Systems Theory axioms and propositions and their implications for enhancing the practice of engineering systems. The chapter concludes by suggesting the reciprocal contributions of Systems Theory and systems engineering and the enhancement of systems engineering to deal more effectively with the increasing volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity of the twenty‐first century.
