Trajectories of Urban Change in Two Ordinary Cities
Simone's research on world cities shows how the everyday life of the poor in cities of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) is organized by transnational networks that are in many ways similar to the operations pursued by the dominant transnational economic networks of scale. However, there is a gap between work à la Shatkin's mainly focusing on economic indicators such as foreign direct investments (FDIs) and street‐level views à la Simone: we rarely get a view of how different aspects of globalization are shaping trajectories of change in LDC cities. This chapter fills this gap for the cities of Hanoi and Ouagadougou. It begins with an account of the political histories of these cities since independence and outlines their different forms of “relatedness” using a series of indicators for the period 1990–2010. The chapter discusses the trajectories of mondialisation of these cities to establish their similarities as well as their differences.
