In the summer of 2009 the Thirra motorway tunnel experienced major problems in a central stretch over 1 km: The tunnel showed severe damage, in November 2009 a 60 m long section collapsed. Great concerns called for innovative solutions in this case since the motorway had to be open for traffic in the summer of 2010. A completely new concept modified the design of the tunnel to near‐circular with muck‐filled bench and heading strengthened by a shotcrete shell.
Im Sommer 2009 war der Thirra Autobahntunnel auf einer Länge von 1 km in einem kritischen Zustand: der Tunnel wies hier große Schäden auf, im November 2009 verbrach ein 60 m langer Abschnitt der Südröhre. Da der Tunnel bereits zu den Sommerferien 2010 wieder nutzbar sein musste, waren hier innovative Lösungen gefragt. Das Konzept beruhte auf Querschnittsoptimierung, extrem kurzem Ringschluss und steifer Schale.
