Continuum Mechanics Description of Shear Banding
This chapter explains physical constraint on any continuum mechanics approach to metal plasticity, i.e. the dimension of crystalline material's smallest representative volume element. The concept of Somigliana dislocation finds application to describe theoretically the fragmented structure of strongly deformed crystalline solid near the onset of strain localisation in the course of shear banding. The procedure of limit transition enables obtaining the analytical solution for simultaneous double shearing, which is free from constitutive assumptions. The first type of shear banding corresponds to the rapid formation of the multiscale shear banding systems . The second type of shear banding relates, on the other hand, to a progressive kind of shear band based on the accumulation of the particular contribution of micro‐shear bands forming clusters gradually. The trajectory of the trace of the tensile axis on a stereographic projection is analysed.
