Environmental change and landslide hazards in Mexico
Natural hazards and environmental change are two issues of major concern in Mexico. This chapter explores issues relating to the implications of land‐use and/or land cover change (LULCC) for the occurrence of natural hazards and disasters, particularly those involving landslides. It examines the value ‐ and difficulties ‐ of land cover monitoring and slope stability modelling for landslide hazard management and mitigation in Mexico. The chapter talks about the landslide disasters and slope stability in Sierra Norte de Puebla and Motozintla. It summarizes the nature of the events and the initial research into the causes and characteristics of the natural processes that gave rise to the socio‐economic impacts, and then attempts to establish the stability conditions of example landslides from each event. The difficulties of modelling slope stability and of assessing potential landslide hazards in relatively data‐poor locations are examined.
