A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Terrace House
This chapter presents the history and development process of terrace house. It then addresses changing trends in architecture and urban design of terrace house. The chapter is also an ideal resource for urban planners, housing developers, builders, and housing trust professionals. Many ideas exist as to how the terrace house might have got its name. One of the most commonly cited associates the word ‘terrace’ with the notion of providing a view. There is something deeply contradictory about the terrace house as a model: on one hand it appears as an almost stubborn ideological insistence on the retention of family homes in a dense urban context that in other countries has led to the invariable adoption of apartment buildings. On the other hand, its narrow and vertical layout obviously derives from the very urban constraints of space‐efficiency and density.
