A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Archaeology and Architecture
The Hellenistic and Roman Near East is home to an abundance of evidence attesting to architecture and architectural development in the region over a long period. The region, however, remains one of the richest in the ancient world for architecture in urban, suburban, and rural contexts, allowing scholars to investigate a variety of development patterns of a local, regional, and imperial nature. Archaeology is slowly but surely closing the architectural void, which the Hellenistic period has presented in this region for quite a while. The Roman period remains the most abundant in archaeological evidence attesting to architecture in the Near East. The city has long been seen as a prototype of the implementation of a Roman urban plan, which took place at some point in the first century ce and was developed further in the second and third centuries ce. In the Beqa'a Valley several sites, have revealed construction of sanctuaries in the Roman period.
