Design and Installation of Intakes for Canadian Supplies
This article discusses the the design and construction of intakes for all water systems utilizing a surface source, whether it be a river or a lake. The main problems of intake design are rather general and are probably applicable to most systems, although the construction equipment and methods locally available must be considered. Further, intakes for Canadian conditions present some problems, such as ice, which are not encountered in intakes in milder climates. Location of the intake at the source, capacity, inlet types, intake hazards, conduit pipe, large intakes, suction wells, screens, construction and design, and costs are all discussed.
