A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The focus on timber frame (rather than concrete or steel) and the nature of renewable materials is explained. In order to understand natural and renewable materials an analysis is given of manmade, synthetic, petrochemical based materials. Mineral or stone wool, misleading claims about recycling, and the sources of recycled materials are discussed, as well as the use of quarrying non‐renewable virgin resources. The advantages and the sources of renewable materials are considered. The importance and difficulties of measuring carbon sequestration and embodied energy are reviewed. Performance and durability of natural materials and how they compare with synthetics are looked at. Different natural materials are discussed in more detail with an outline of the many different kinds of timber systems and products, and non‐renewable materials such as earth and lime.
