Five Points of Architecture and AI
In 1923, Le Corbusier proposed his Five Points of Architecture, a set of formal strategies rooted in the socio‐technological changes of that era. The following new five points summarize the opportunities and challenges ahead as we move toward an understanding of architecture in solidarity with both human and nonhuman beings. It includes: the challenge of bias, the cultivation of sensibility, the crisis of labor, the freedom of incoherence and the redefinition of authorship. The discipline of architecture has developed an unhealthy relationship with the labor necessary to produce good designs. After 30 years of digital tools in architecture, generative artificial intelligence tools are one of the only tools that help to expand the design imagination by focusing on the early design phases. However, most design tools prioritize accuracy and certainty, and as a result, they require designers to create workflows that quickly organize and structure their ideas, potentially prematurely.
