A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Abacus and Sketch
This chapter discusses whether technological advancements have equipped contemporary design engineers with the tools that have made them more capable of designing extraordinary engineering structures than their forebears. The role of the design engineer is largely concerned with ‘designed’ buildings and structures that have an inherent system by which they stand up and resist the forces to which they are subjected. Individual structures can be distinct. Sketches, drawings, diagrams and models are the tools of designers, which allow ideas, and aspects of those ideas, to be visualized, articulated and interrogated. The chapter explains calculation is a skill the practicing engineer needs and applies, whether an abacus, slide rule, calculator − or, latterly, spreadsheet or software analysis package − is used. The chapter also features numerous architectural designs, including Christopher Wren, St Paul's Cathedral, London, 1675–1710; Frei Otto and Günter Behnisch, Olympic Stadium, Munich, Germany, 1972; and Edward Cullinan Architects, the Weald and Downland Museum Gridshell, West Sussex, UK, 2002.
