A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Contemporary cities have a profound impact on the wider environment, causing habitat and biodiversity losses, fragmentation of habitats in the agricultural hinterland as well as in urban areas. Cities result in soil erosion, the drying of the landscape and flooding. Clean water is wasted and natural waters polluted. Cities suffer from urban heat islands, air pollution, light pollution and noise. Cities are supported by vast areas of agricultural land use huge quantities of concrete, steel, glass, timber and fossil fuels. Cities are only now looking at reducing the production of waste and are vulnerable to the effects of Peak Oil. Cities and civilisation need to address these problems as a matter of urgency.
