Reflective Practices and Learning in Construction Organisations via Professional Communities of Practice
This chapter contributes to an ongoing debate on knowledge management (KM) and learning in large hierarchical construction organisations by mobilising the concepts of boundary spanning and reflective practice as a way of analysing the role of communities of practice in promoting reflective thinking and organisational learning to improve project practice. Robust KM systems and processes can support the transfer of explicit knowledge that is documented and stored in organisational repositories. The lack of KM at a programme level led to systemic failures to transfer and reuse knowledge internally and externally. The chapter reports upon findings that highlight the importance of programme management practices in project‐based firms for overcoming the inherent contradiction between organising to meet short‐term project goals and the long‐term organisational learning strategy. Reflective practice is widely considered to be an important activity for the development of capabilities and continuous organisational learning.
