A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The continuous beams of Chapter
are treated as part of a multistorey framed structure with composite columns. The types and classes of bolted beam‐to‐column connections are explained, and the Eurocode methods for calculating their strength and stiffness properties are given, with examples. Imperfections in unbraced and braced frames are represented by nominal sidesway or horizontal forces. A sequence for the design of a braced frame is suggested, with reference to cases where second‐order global analysis may be required. Concrete‐encased and concrete‐filled steel tube composite columns are described, with the general and simplified design methods of Eurocode 4 for stocky and slender column lengths. The worked examples include both types of column, resistance of columns to buckling and to uniaxial and biaxial bending, load introduction into columns, nominal‐pin and partial‐strength end‐plate beam‐to‐column connections, and the use of high‐strength materials in a column.
