Stormwater Wetlands
Stormwater wetlands come in a wide variety of sizes and operational characteristics. They have a number of advantages as a stormwater control measure (SCM), including very good management of both stormwater hydrology and water quality. This chapter focuses on stormwater wetland operation and design points including wetland sizing and definition of internal wetland features, discussion of herbaceous plants that have been found to commonly thrive in stormwater wetlands, a review of a proper growing soil medium, and the importance for and design guidance on a flexible outlet structure. Preventing wetlands from becoming mosquito breeding grounds is also discussed. Many more species of wetland vegetation can flourish in non‐stormwater wetlands than in stormwater wetlands. Small‐scale wetland systems can also be used as SCMs. An example of this is a submerged gravel wetland. Inspection of stormwater wetlands focuses on two interrelated components: water pathways and vegetation.
