Fire Detection
Knowledge of diagnostic fire characteristics enables one to relate the time from established burning (EB) to the fire size at detection. Both detection instruments and humans can detect a fire. A methodical analysis of human detection, assuming an inoperative or no automatic detection system, gives a good understanding of the way the building works. This chapter examines performance analysis of automatic and human detection systems. A detection analysis involves the diagnostic fire, detector operation, and transport of products of combustion (POCs) from the fire to the detector. Detection analysis uses the actual installation, including detector type, locations, the diagnostic fire, and the transport path from fire to detector. The concepts of human detection are similar to those of automatic detection except that an individual's location is movable. A base scenario analysis will provide a good understanding of the effect of the building and diagnostic fire on human detection.
