A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This chapter argues that the most effective strategy for making change in the United States is to engage local actors in the process of perfecting their own communities, and justifies that argument via these four points: the early bones of the United States were largely built by local volunteer initiatives, a resilient practice worth reviving; people are “wired” to love and invest in the place where they reside; small groups of dedicated people are among the best way to get things done; and perfecting community becomes an effective change strategy only when paired with a place‐specific theory of change (TOC). The strategy behind perfecting community combines two insights: people feel invested in and passionate about issues affecting their neighborhood; and people working in small groups organized by their passions—socializing, gardening, fitness, beauty, water, art, business, energy—can achieve outsized ends. An effective TOC requires an agreed‐on understanding of where the campaign is starting.
