Role of Citizen Science in Air Quality Monitoring
Citizen science provides a step forward in the engagement of local populations in the monitoring and management of urban pollution matters. This chapter explores new innovations and technologies in the field of citizen science to engage civil society in the monitoring and management of air pollution in urban contexts. Citizen science can lead to protection of public health and the environment by providing communities with better data on pollution in their neighbourhoods, reducing the costs of air pollution monitoring and better management of facilities to support regulatory and public agencies and researchers. Citizen scientists have engaged in biomonitoring to complement studies of direct air pollution monitoring by assessing the impacts of air pollution on the leaves of plants sensitive to O3 effects. Engagement in air quality monitoring may enhance local awareness, knowledge of the spatial trends in air pollutants among residents, educators, advocacy groups, and policymakers at local scales.
