Recent Fires and Failed Strategies
Over the past few decades, fire safety has taken some significant steps forward that have made it possible to achieve high safety standards today in a variety of application areas. The merit of this advance in so different sectors is to be found in the overlapping of multiple factors that, layering one on top of the other, have considerably thickened the level of fire safety potentially achievable today. Despite this, the more or less recent news headlines continue to be populated by incidents involving fires and/or explosions that attract media attention due to their severe consequences in terms of fatalities, injuries, damage to the artistic‐historical heritage and so on. A number of incidents are illustrated in the chapter, with the aim of discussing the reasons that led to the failure of the planned fire‐safety strategies.
