Methods of Moment Based on First‐ and Second‐Order Transformation
For the direct methods of moment, the reliability index or the probability of failure is estimated directly using the first few moments of the original performance function without any transformation. The direct methods of moment generally can give good approximation of the structural reliability, however, when outside the applicable range, the formula will prevent the application of the direct methods of moment. In order to overcome such problems, this chapter presents the methods of moment based on first‐ and second‐order transformation of the performance function. The reliability analysis method is based on the linearisation or the first‐order approximation of the transformed performance function in the standard normal space at its design point, therefore it is referred to the first‐order reliability method (FORM). In order to improve the accuracy of FORM, the performance function is approximated by a second‐order function at the design point, which is usually referred to as second‐order reliability method.
