Step 12: Identify Fire Department Access Roads
Access roads must meet minimum requirements so that fire department vehicles can approach the building within an adequate distance to allow firefighters to reach all sides of a building. A fire department vehicle, called a fire apparatus in the international fire code (IFC), must have access to within 150 feet of all portions of the facility and all portions of the exterior walls of a building at the first story. This distance is measured from the nearest edge of the fire apparatus access road. Public roads, alleys, and on‐site parking areas will qualify as fire apparatus access roads, on the condition they comply with the 150‐foot limitation and conform to the required design specifications. The design requirements for fire apparatus access roads are generally nonspecific, utilizing a more performance‐based approach. However, some fire departments may have very specific criteria, which should be obtained early in the design process.
