The advances of ever more complex visualisation and 3‐D modelling techniques in medicine have brought a new emphasis to surgery in which the surgeon's role has become more concerned with design than reconstruction, as the aesthetic of the finished human product becomes the main focus and reason for surgery. Marcos Cruz looks at some art projects that have questioned and extended this application of surgery and design, as well as asking what the implications are for architecture.
